Here is what I did/do. Not to say it will work for everyone. I will suggest working towards these points are better than Waiting, Watching and Wondering. Anything, including barking at the moon is better than Waiting, Watching and Wondering
I borrowed a few of these points from other sites. Interesting, to me, each point was a conclusion I arrived while reading from all points of view, while searching for help.. Each point has a special meaning for me. And I believe each and every point helps
Each point has a detractor somewhere and those arguments can be compelling. Bet they relook at things when the necessity arises.
1. SELF-CONTROL
I had a full life of enjoying the fruits of this world. sex/drugs and rock roll and not working for tomorrows health. Time to enjoy a little less indulgence.
2. FRESH AIR
Fresh air not to be confused with an air purifier. Outside air. Out side of town.
3. DRINK WATER
Does not mean; juice, soda pop or coffee. Water, (natural water) with minerals (natural minerals) hydrates your body in addition to helping supply it with minerals. All with out the hassle of taking a pill.
4. PROPER REST AT PROPER TIME
The body has things it needs to accomplish while one sleeps. There is a natural order to how it works. For some reasons during the evolution of life, ( has nothing to do with religion, God created us a long time ago and we are forever adapting). We adapted to sleeping when the sun went down and rising when the sun came up. Many of us have heard that shift work will make you old before your time. Many of us got to realize just how true that statement is. Early to bed early to rise.
5. BALANCE
Dont get carried away on any one subject or mission. Balance your life, work or whatever it is you do. For instance as easy and productive as it may be listing these steps, I have to first exercise. That quick and its over
6. EXERCISE
The average heart rate is in the neighborhood of 60-70 beats/min. Anytime you raise that rate above the resting rate you cause the heart to pump blood at a greater rate. This creates better circulation. A very good thing. Look at most anything that doesnt get good circulation, it runs poorly and soon breaks. You dont have to run a marathon, you dont have to run a mile, you dont even have to run a 100yard dash. Though if you start out walking you will find that in due time you may want to do those things. You still dont have to do them to become and/or stay healthy.
Exercise is so easy, None of that ONE MORE, ONE MORE, YOU CAN DO IT stuff. Relax go at it at a slow pace. I guarantee you wont become Sly Stalone or Cher, no matter how hard you try, I do guarantee you will become a better you.
There are numerous ways to get a good (easy) aerobic work out, Some require equipment, <$500) . Walking cost nothing and is as easy as eating an apple.
7. PROPER NUTRITION
Moderation. Foods and diets are argued forever. I now subscribe to the thought that natural food eaten uncooked can not harm you. All else can be, is and will be argued. Marijuana is no more a natural herb for human consumption than a bag of cashews are a healthy snack.. No 2 lb bags of cashews, joints or cows hangin from a tree in the garden of Eden, just apples, and oranges, and a host of other good things, to be eaten right off the tree.
8. EXPOSE YOURSELF TO SUNLIGHT.
No, tanning booths are not sunlight. Plants grow as a direct result of sunlight and they dont require sunglasses to filter the sunlight . No sunlight, no growth. Sunlight is good. .
9. STRESS RELIEF
Ever hear the words "you will worry yourself sick". You can. I can literally track physiological changes happening when I get stressed. I can monitor my blood pressure and see it rise during stressful times. We have the ability to choose our battles. Leave the small stuff behind.
10. THINK POSITIVE
If you think the previous points can possibly be helpful you will increase your chances of recovery, just from the standpoint of belief. I you dont think they or anything else can help then obviously you are not going to work at recovery So,,,,, that would be similar to Waiting, Watching and Wondering.
11. AVOID SUGAR
There is a controversial argument that cancer cells utilize sugar/glucose at a greater rate than normal cells which in turn could mean cancer feeds off sugar? The finale on that thought is still out, however, sugar has no nutritional value, and is classed as empty calories, no vitamin/mineral/anything. Good sugar things as opposed to bad sugar things are in the eye of the beholder. Behold, a soda pop is a bad sugar thing, a banana is a good sugar thing. However you can find arguments why fruits are not necessarily good for you. I subscribe to the thought that natural food eaten uncooked can not harm you. All else can be, is and will be argued.
12. A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THEM AND A LITTLE LESS ABOUT ME.
It just makes you feel good to do something for someone else. Not to mention it takes our minds off our own troubles.
13. CHALLENGE YOURSELF and set goals
Challenges are personal, and can be small or large. Regardless, achieving a challenge can be mentally uplifting, far beyond a doctors customary remark, your doing fine. For me, one challenge was to get to the other end of the house to exercise. Then I challenged myself to get as far through the day as I could without taking a pain pill so I could exercise. Then making it to September 05 when the new life insurance takes effect. Today my physical challenges are measure in miles, elevation and time. Challenges start small. September 05 is a breeze I'm now thinking ahead. Anyone out there who will underwrite a larger life insurance policy?
14. Music
I dont know what it is but a good rock and roll song can get you moving and stir your soul. Ever get the chills from Oh Happy Day or Ode to Billy Joe. You cant buy that flush you get over your body. It has to be doing something good, health wise. Try it.
15. Laughter
Immediately after my diagnosis I lost my humor. This was a dreary time. Today the same conventional wisdom for survival applies, but no one is depressed while laughing, so,,,, when I find an appropriate way to share what I think is funny. I'll post it. Until then, find the humor in it, it helps.
Strictly from a Laymans point of view.
Our bodies are complex machines. All the little neurons and lymph things that dictate the reactions our bodies go through are better accepted at face value. If it makes you feel better to help someone than to argue with someone wouldnt it stand to reason that a warm gentle feel is healthier than a pumped up high blood pressure feel. Then yea, thinking and accepting that helping someone rather than arguing with someone. is probably conducive to better health. Its better than a poke in the eye.
As for proper nutrition, there are an abundance of studies and thoughts as to what diet/foods are best. Nature taught the tree how to grow and at what position in the sun was best for producing food and nature taught the body how it should digest it and it never asked for money or praise for doing a good job.Eat at your own risk!
