If it were only so simple

Since it simply is not possible to identify the particular herbs involved in this remarkable case, nor the whereabouts of the patient or the identity of the practitioner who prescribed the mixture, what sort of practical advice could be offered to patients who might be interested in exploring herbal treatment for cancer?

That advice would be, Beware!

    When I first started researching information on cancer I started looking in the mainstream area; AMA stuff, Mayo Clinic American Cancer Society, Cancer Center of America. , , , , . I learned very little. Mostly I learned was that there is little agreement on the whats and whys concerning cancer. Lots of information about health habits while going through chemo. lots of information on cancer support, lots of information on upcoming events regarding cancer, but no information on recovery or rehabilitation.
I then moved into the alternative area, same story, with the exceptions that the alternative area has little oversight and   cures/recovery  are abundant   and many will take your heart and soul because they know you are in a vulnerable situation. Case in point, the above. I have not even read it because I don't believe it. The reason I don't believe it is because. I have read hundreds of similar type cures. 
The above paragraph in underlined red was attached to a story about a person who was cured of his cancer. It was sent to me from a reputable, a reputable doctor who has entered into the area of the alternative medicine market.
This is the time for all newly diagnosed cancer victims to understand and accept, there is no cure for cancer!!!! Don't take my word on that just ask any, just ask any doctor.

I will qualify that bold statement, there are things that you can do to recover from cancer!!! Those things require change.

The following are suggestions as you begin your search for information.

1           Start with the mainstream and learn how they respond to cancer. This is how they respond to you. Know what to expect from those you are entrusting with your life. Don’t automatically accept everything you read, even from the mainstream they have been known to be wrong. Gather information from many areas. Even the status quo thinks differently. Filter this information and accept that they are selling as are the alternative area.
There are many sites that will sell you information on cancer. The information may not fit your needs even though people like me think you should do exactly as I say and do. One such site sells a personalized information packet for your particular type of cancer, for hundreds of dollars. If I had hundreds of dollars I would buy it, even knowing what I know about cancer now.
Bottom line, most of us don’t have unlimited funds to buy every possible book or treatment. Hold on to your money.

2            Alternative Treatments and Supplements can be dangerous. One supplement, Beta Carotene, ( the valuable nutrient of carrots) has a notable and dangerous consequence. Use of this supplement has been linked to an increase in lung cancer of smokers. Beta carotene supplements were found to increase the risk of lung cancer by as much as 18 %.. This is not to say that smokers who eat carrots are at an increased risk for lung cancer. This is to say that clinical studies have shown that smokers who take a supplemental form of Beta carotene are at an increased risk for lung cancer. If that doesn’t give pause to the use of artificial nutrients, I don’t know what will. Know what you are taking.

     I am not informed enough to talk of benifits of Alternative Treatments, however, there is a site created by  Ann Fonfa who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer over ten years ago whos mission is to pass on info about such.  It is a trustwothy site. annieappleseedproject.org    My personal belief is ( as a starting point)   treat the body well and it becomes better prepared to fight cancer and I believe that holds true regardless of the cancer/disease type.  As with all that you read,  know the source, this is and unbiased article on Ann Fonfa.  http://tinyurl.com/3uqzt   Oh yea, Ann Fonfa has Stage IV Breast Cancer, and was pronounce cancer free, in 2002.  Our fates can  change

3            Smoking Causes Cancer Stop smoking now!!! If you smoke and are searching for a form of recovery from cancer, there is no information on this site that will be of help.  If you smoke, especialy after diagnosis you are doing a diservice to those who got lung cancer and never smoked. 

4            Cancer support boards and posting boards are great places for information. But understand most folks on these posting sites are just like you, they are learning and not always a reliable source of information. Accept these site for what they are, support communities. A large difference from an informational site. Learn to filter information.

5           Understand what you want. Even though I firmly believe that there will never be a magic pill to cure or prevent cancer I understand there are many that in their search are looking for just such a cure all. I don’t know how to advise on that other than to say accepting responsibility that you believe someone can give you a cure is a step in accepting responsibility. Just because I firmly believe it isn’t available doesn’t mean I am correct. Good luck.

6         Don’t let emotion drive your needs. Believing some of the information is a little like buying a new car.  It always sounds so good until you get home and realize things weren’t exactly as they were when you were all jazzed during the sales pitch.

This is an example of good information. It  details over one hundred  supplements.  Interesting to note that the initial link was to the American Cancer Society and for some reason the information was removed from their site,    however,  the folks there were kind enough to spend some time to locate the information and they supplied me with the link to Sloan Kettering.  In any case if your thinking about supplemental herbs, and we all do, become informed.
